Connecting stakeholder perspectives through Evidence-Based Design for ALN Schools
Carly Parramore, AtkinsRéalis

This presentation demonstrates how a mixed-method, evidence-based approach connected insights from ALN school staff and students to inform design. Using pictorial questionnaires as part of a mixed method approach to stakeholder engagement, we identified key themes across staff and student experience including the importance of quiet spaces, social interaction and flexible areas that support student choice. Insights were synthesised into adjacency maps and recommendations, translating evidence into actionable design strategies.

Peter Fisk, Lovelock Mitchell Architects, Samuel McCourt de Sanchez, Curtins & Andrew Garner, Wynne Construction

Ysgol Robert Owen represents a significant milestone in Powys’ ALN education provision, balancing flexibility, inclusivity, and sustainability. Designed for maximum adaptability, the school supports a full range of ALN needs, from PMLD to ASD, with features such as passive supervision, seamless wayfinding, and an immersive learning landscape.  Led by Peter Fisk (Lovelock Mitchell Architects), Samuel McCourt de Sanchez (Curtins), and Andrew Garner (Wynne Construction), this session explores innovative approaches to ALN education design and how collaboration drove excellence in both design and delivery. Attendees will gain practical insights into sustainability, stakeholder engagement, and high-performance ALN environments.
