Inclusive Learning Environments: Belonging, Wellbeing and Trauma-Informed Practice
Ysgol Cynefin: Cardiff’s Next Generation of ALN Schools
This session explores the delivery of much-needed Additional Learning Needs (ALN) provision in Cardiff through the transformation of the former Court School into Ysgol Cynefin. Delivered across two new sites in Fairwater and Llanrumney, the schools address growing demand for specialist education. Grounded in the concept of Cynefin — meaning habitat and belonging — the design creates inclusive, nurturing environments that support wellbeing and identity. Featuring insights from Laura Sampford, Cardiff Council, and Jamyn Beesley, Head Teacher, the session shares lessons from collaborative delivery, curriculum alignment and the creation of high-quality learning environments for vulnerable pupils.
Designing School with Trauma Informed Practices in mind!
Designing schools for learners with Additional Learning Needs (ALN) using Trauma Informed Practice focuses on creating safe, supportive environments that help students who have experienced trauma thrive. This approach, rooted in healthcare but increasingly vital in education, emphasises evidence-based design guided by research and lived experience. Key elements include stakeholder engagement, safety, emotional wellbeing, social connection, integrated education and therapy spaces, and staff support. Thoughtful design like natural light, flexible layouts, and sensory rooms aid emotional regulation and learning. Trauma informed design moves beyond architecture to foster healing, inclusion, and growth for vulnerable learners and staff alike.
