The Building Safety (Wales) Bill was passed on 10 March 2026 – one of the largest pieces of legislation ever considered by the Senedd. We will break down this complex legislation and how it applies to education buildings in Wales; summarise fire safety legislation applicable in Wales, the requirements for fire risk assessments, dealing with fire safety issues and prohibition notices/consequences for fire safety issues under the Building Safety Act; and conclude with a panel discussion exploring lessons learn in practice by education providers assessing estate portfolios for fire safety/building safety risks; and considering refurbishment/sustainability goals against costs and achievability of the same standards of building performance for building/fire safety with refurbishment projects.
