The Education Buildings Wales Awards will take place on 1 July 2025.

The Education Buildings Wales Awards celebrate excellence across the sector, recognising outstanding consultants, contractors, clients, architects, and projects, alongside achievements in innovation and sustainability.

With 10 categories to choose from, the awards highlight the very best in educational building design and delivery.

The awards are free to enter, with a qualifying period from 1 July 2023 to 31 January 2025. Submissions close on Monday 24 March 2025.

Architectural Practice of the Year  

This award recognises an architectural practice that has demonstrated excellence in delivering innovative, functional, and impactful design projects for the education sector. Projects should highlight value delivery, client satisfaction, and a strong commitment to sustainability and innovation, addressing contemporary challenges in education.  

 Eligibility  

Open to architectural practices working on education projects. Submissions should focus on projects completed between 01/07/2023 and 31/01/2025.  

  Judging Criteria  

Submissions will be marked out of 10 for each of the following criteria:  

  • Quality of Design (10 points):  
    Evidence of exceptional design aligned with educational goals, showcasing innovation, creativity, and user-centred solutions. Designs should demonstrate adaptability to the evolving needs of educational institutions.  

  • Value Delivery (10 points):  
    Demonstration of how the design provided measurable value, including cost-effectiveness, long-term operational efficiency, and adaptability to future needs. Include quantitative data or outcomes where possible.  

  • Client Engagement and Satisfaction (10 points):  
    Examples of client collaboration, responsiveness to feedback, and testimonials from key stakeholders, such as headteachers, facilities managers, or school governors.  

  • Impact on Stakeholders (10 points):  
    Evidence of the project’s positive impact on students, staff, and the wider community, focusing on how the design has enhanced educational outcomes and environments.  

  • Sustainability and Innovation (10 points):  
    Commitment to eco-friendly practices, sustainable materials, and innovative approaches to design challenges. Include specific metrics on carbon savings, energy efficiency, or other sustainability outcomes.  

Submission Requirements  

Entrants must provide the following:  

  • A written summary (max 1,000 words) addressing the judging criteria.  

  • Case studies of up to 3 projects, including visuals (photos, renderings, or drawings).  

  • At least one client testimonial, ideally from a senior stakeholder.  

  • Supporting evidence such as:  

  • Metrics on project outcomes (e.g., cost savings, energy efficiency).  

  • Sustainability data (e.g., carbon footprint reductions, energy performance improvements).  

  • Results of user satisfaction surveys or stakeholder feedback.

This award recognises the passion, direction, and innovation demonstrated by a School, Multi-Academy Trust, College, Local Authority, or University in shaping and delivering a successful new build or refurbishment project. The winning organisation will have played a proactive role in championing collaboration, creativity, and excellence, ensuring that the project meets the needs of students, staff, and the wider community.  

Eligibility  

Open to Schools, Multi-Academy Trusts, Colleges, Local Authorities, and Universities that have led or commissioned education projects. Submissions should focus on projects completed between 01/07/2023 and 31/01/2025.  

Judging Criteria  

Submissions will be marked out of 10 for each of the following criteria:  

  • Passion and Vision (10 points)  
    Evidence of the client’s clear vision, ambition, and dedication to delivering an outstanding learning environment, demonstrating a strong commitment to excellence.  

  • Collaboration and Leadership (10 points)  
    Examples of how the client has driven a collaborative approach, engaging with design teams, contractors, and key stakeholders to bring their vision to life.  

  • Innovation and Creativity (10 points)  
    Demonstration of how the client has championed innovation—whether in design, technology, or project delivery—to push boundaries and create inspiring, future-proofed spaces.  

  • Impact on Users and Community (10 points)  
    Evidence of the project’s positive impact on students, staff, and the wider community, ensuring inclusivity, wellbeing, and enhanced educational outcomes.  

  • Commitment to Sustainability and Long-Term Value (10 points)  
    How the client has prioritised sustainability, energy efficiency, and long-term value, ensuring the project delivers benefits beyond its completion.

  • Long-Term Contribution to the Education Sector (10 points)  
    How the consultancy has influenced policy, best practice, or innovation within education estates, leaving a lasting impact on the sector.

    Evidence of outstanding build quality, attention to detail, and high standards of project delivery, ensuring durable and inspiring learning environments.

    Examples of how the contractor has worked closely with clients, design teams, and stakeholders to ensure smooth project delivery and alignment with the client’s vision.  

  • Innovation and Problem-Solving (10 points)  
    Demonstration of innovative construction methods, offsite manufacturing, or modern technologies that improved efficiency, reduced waste, or enhanced project outcomes.  

  • Sustainability and Social Value (10 points)  
    Commitment to sustainable construction practices, reducing environmental impact, and delivering social value, such as apprenticeships, local employment, and community engagement.  

  • Project Delivery and Impact (10 points)  
    Evidence of successful project completion on time and budget, with measurable benefits to students, staff, and the wider education community.

    Demonstration of how the space is practical, adaptable, and suited to evolving learning styles, supporting both traditional and technology-enhanced education.  

  • Impact on Learners and Educators (10 points)  
    Examples of how the space enhances the student and teacher experience, fostering engagement, collaboration, and improved learning outcomes.  

  • Sustainability and Wellbeing (10 points)  
    Consideration of environmental impact, energy efficiency, and wellbeing-focused design, ensuring a healthy and future-proofed learning environment.  

  • Client and User Engagement (10 points)  
    Evidence of collaboration with the client, staff, and students to ensure the space meets their needs and aspirations.

    Evidence of the project's use of sustainable design elements, eco-friendly construction materials, and energy-efficient systems. This includes efforts to minimize the environmental impact of the building through green building practices and certifications. 

  • Energy and Resource Efficiency (10 points) 
    Demonstration of how the facility reduces energy consumption, conserves water and minimizes waste. This includes the use of renewable energy sources, water-saving technologies, and waste-reduction strategies, ensuring efficient use of resources. 

  • Encouraging Sustainable Behaviours (10 points) 
    Evidence of how the design promotes sustainable behaviours and engages users in sustainable practices. This may include educational features, green infrastructure, or incentives for students and staff to adopt eco-friendly habits. 

  • Health, Well-Being, and Indoor Environmental Quality (10 points) 
    How the facility supports the health and well-being of its users through the integration of natural lighting, ventilation, indoor air quality, and a comfortable, toxin-free environment conducive to learning. 

  • Measurable Environmental Impact and Outcomes (10 points) 
    Demonstration of the project’s measurable impact on sustainability, including energy use reductions, water conservation, waste minimization, and overall environmental benefits. Submissions should include metrics and data showing the long-term success of the sustainability initiatives.

    Evidence of how the project removes barriers to access, ensuring physical, sensory, and cognitive inclusivity, particularly for students with Special Educational Needs and disabilities.  

  • User-Centred Approach (10 points)  
    Demonstration of how the project responds directly to the needs of diverse users, including engagement with students, educators, and SEN specialists in the design process.  

  • Innovation in Inclusive Design (10 points)  
    Examples of creative and forward-thinking solutions that enhance accessibility, such as assistive technology, adaptable spaces, or specialised learning environments for students with SEND and additional needs.  

  • Impact on Learning and Wellbeing (10 points)

    Demonstration of how the project improves energy efficiency, reduces carbon footprint, and incorporates sustainable materials and construction methods.  

  • Adaptability and Future-Proofing (10 points)  
    Examples of how the refurbishment ensures the building is flexible, adaptable, and fit for future educational needs, supporting evolving teaching methods and technologies.  

  • Impact on Users and Learning Experience (10 points)  
    Evidence of how the refurbishment has positively impacted students, staff, and the wider school or university community, improving wellbeing, accessibility, and engagement.  

  • Client and Stakeholder Collaboration (10 points)
