WEPCo, in partnership with Flintshire County Council (FCC) and Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council, has delivered four new schools in Wales through the Mutual Investment Model (MIM), including the Mynydd Isa Campus. As the first operational MIM education projects, they offer valuable insight into how public and private sectors can collaborate effectively. This presentation will share lessons learnt from planning, design, construction, and early operation, with perspectives from FCC and the Mynydd Isa Campus team. It will explore emerging successes, challenges, and behaviours that support strong partnership working in delivering modern learning environments

This session explores how evolving environmental design standards, post-occupancy learning and strategic investment planning are shaping the future of sustainable education buildings in Wales. Drawing on lessons from the DfE CF2025 framework, the Welsh Schools MIM programme, and live college estate projects, the session examines how schools and colleges in Wales can deliver low-carbon, high-performing learning environments more efficiently and cost-effectively in response to the Welsh Government carbon targets.

  2. Level 4
    60 mins

This session explores how collaboration, co-design, and the adaptation of existing educational environments can help to deliver learning that supports wellbeing, learning culture and community integration. Through two contrasting case studies, a major new city-centre education development and the refurbishment of an existing sixth form college, the session examines how thoughtful design can respond to evolving educational, social, and operational needs, placing learners at the centre of the process.

Two sessions focus on designing inclusive ALN environments. One explores Ysgol Cynefin’s delivery in Cardiff, highlighting collaboration and creating spaces that support belonging and wellbeing. The other examines trauma informed design, showing how thoughtful, evidence-based approaches can support emotional regulation, inclusion and positive outcomes for learners and staff.

Universities generate vast amounts of data across their estates. Teaching spaces, libraries, study areas, and support facilities continuously produce information through occupancy sensors, timetabling systems, access systems, and user feedback. However, many institutions still struggle to translate this data into clear, operational decisions that improve space utilisation, sustainability, and the student and staff experience.

This session explores the evolving landscape of safety, building performance, and sustainability within the education sector, examining how schools can be designed, delivered, and managed to meet increasingly demanding environmental and safety requirements, particularly from the Building Safety (Wales) Bill. Drawing on current research, legislative changes, and real-world project experience, the session considers both new-build and refurbishment approaches, with a focus on the opportunities and challenges associated with timber-framed schools and fire safety.
